Arvin & Danika

Category: Interfaith

It never ceases to amaze us here at Banga how love and laughter can warm us up, even on the coldest of winter days in Philly! Danika and Arvin brought cultures, friends, and family together at the Loews Hotel for a traditional Sikh wedding. While the weather was gloomy outside, inside was nothing but vibrant, thanks to bright colours and even brighter smiles in this urban-meets-tradition celebration of love. We sent down GB and Steve to see the magic, themselves, and help Danika and Arvin keep a little piece of their special day forever.

Like any wedding, this special day brought two families together to celebrate the happy couple. But this particular day brought together not only two families, but two cultures and traditions to start a new chapter of both old and new traditions. The day started off with a traditional Sikh ceremony. What came next was an evening reception draped in colour, excitement, memorable

toasts and epic dance battles. With the help of Arvin’s mom’s vision and the hard work of Sean de Freita of Designs by Sean and Therese Cole-Hubbs of Electric Karma, every detail, from the flowers, to the drapes, to the tabletops, turned the venue into a modern and elegant ballroom extraordinaire. It was a truly memorable day and Arvin’s sister, Shana, told us, “The baraat was one of the most epic spectacles ever. We shut down market street in the middle of downtown Philadelphia. Arvin rode down the street on his horse with City Hall in the background. We had live boliyan sung by Navdeep Kundi and live dhol played by Richie Kumar and Nihal Singh. It was truly a sight to be seen and something we’ll never forget.”

We love the balance and the harmony in the cultures uniting, just like that between Danika and Arvin. Despite a blizzard in Philly a few days before the festivities began, Danika’s family and friends made the journey from the west coast to join in on the celebrations. This started off with the mendhi hosted at Arvin’s family’s home where Monita, the henna artist, gorgeously applied mendhi to the bride and her loved ones in a lotus theme, since Arvin’s name means lotus! The sangeet fell on St. Patrick’s Day, and because Danika comes from an Irish background, the evening began with bagpipes and Irish step dancers from Villanova University. And of course, no matter what the background, when love and music are in the air, anyone and everyone loves to dance. Danika comes from an opera and theatre background, so her family and friends organized Broadway-themed numbers for her and Arvin’s sister, Shana, arranged a musical trip down memory-lane to represent every phase of his life, ending with the Eagles fight song for the world’s biggest Eagles football fan! The bhangra team, Shaan Mutiyaaran Di, also performed for the couple making it no surprise that everyone had a blast rocking the dance floor that night.

Danika, an LA-native, is very art-deco. A lover of all things simple and sophisticated and all things bold, she found her soulmate in her Philly sweetheart. The smile on her face and the look in her eyes showed the love for not just the man of her dreams, but to all of the people who helped make her dream become a reality.

Arvin was nothing but beaming on his big day in his hometown. Coming from a Sikh background, he brought his new bride into his culture and traditions. His family says that he usually hates taking photos and has no patience to pose, but to our pleasant surprise, he was more than happy to pause and let us capture the moment. Who wouldn’t want to smile with such a beautiful new bride and finding your forever person?

GB and Steve headed down to represent the Banga team and were so swept away by the magic. They went to whatever lengths it took to help capture such a wonderful day. Filled with romance, spectacle, and a surprise or two, there were so many amazing moments that we wanted to capture and share.

Arvin and Danika, you were an absolute blast and we loved working with you as much as you love each other. We can’t wait for you two to build a beautiful life together and to continue writing your story of love, life, and happiness.
